THE UNDERLINE

2017-2019

‘March Studio embarked on the creation of a vibrant graphic language for each activity node. Each public space captures specific themes that emerged from extensive community engagement’

The elimination of level crossings along Melbourne’s rail corridors has unlocked valuable public space that was previously inaccessible, presenting new opportunities for community use and creating a shared path network beneath the now elevated rail line. The Underline is a series of new public spaces yielded by the removal of five suburban rail crossings south of the city. Leveraging neighbourhood activity nodes of railway station and strip shops, these areas exude a distinct and dynamic identity, and the introduction of sports courts and recreational equipment encourages activity and inclusion.

Collaborating with landscape architects ASPECT Studios, March Studio embarked on the creation of a vibrant graphic language for each activity node. Each public space captures specific themes that emerged from extensive community engagement: for example, the bespoke design for one park was inspired by a blueprint drawing that paid homage to the adjacent suburb's industrial history. A key element of the design strategy was the cinematic use of colour and pattern to reflect the social and cultural values of the area.

This super-graphic code forms a backdrop to court markings in the active recreation areas, continues over the walls and columns of the civil engineering structure and culminates in a wayfinding system that encourages exploration along this linear experience. Through the Underline activation, these station precincts are transformed beyond transit hubs into valued community spaces that foster a sense of local pride and community cohesion.
