THE JANE
2010
‘March Studio employed precise measurements to create the hull's elegant lines, placing great importance on setting the floor height and meticulously following the boat's inherent curves to honour its language.’
Jane is a wooden boat that beautifully harmonises aesthetics and functionality. The journey of Jane began when Eggleston’s stepfather, Christopher Sinn, suggested that March Studio design an extension for the family house, which was overflowing with extended family over the summer. Eggleston's response was unconventional — he suggested they build a boat instead. Crafted with meticulous care and detail by the Wooden Boatshop and Sinn, Jane is a 46-foot cruising smack with a sprung keel.
The hull of Jane was designed by Ken Lacco, whose drawings compelled Sinn to bring the boat to life. Entrusted with the task of designing the fitout, March Studio employed precise measurements to create the hull's elegant lines, placing great importance on setting the floor height and meticulously following the boat's inherent curves to honour its language. Jane boasts a wealth of intricate details — a gracefully curved dining booth adorned with brass accents, a snug writing nook with personalised stationery, and a bookshelf secured with leather straps.
For Eggleston, this project holds profound resonance, as it was designed to celebrate the life and memory of his mother, Jane. A collaboration with family friend Tim Phillips, the passionate owner of Sorrento's Wooden Boatshop, and in honour of the memory of Ken Lacco, Jane embodies teamwork – an act of memorial for all involved.
