SECTION 08

‘Through the transformation of 100 pallets into decking, seating, and tables, as well as the suspension of 50 umbrellas creating partial enclosure, the project captures the essence of transience.’
This urban molecule brings the city fringe into the CBD; it is the meeting of a shipping yard with the central urban situation of China town. With Melbourne’s CBD towering above, this open-air setting creates a captivating stage where the individual becomes both spectator and performer, as an array of towering structures form an urban spectacle. Section 08 is Melbourne’s first truly temporary bar, eschewing the niceties of fashion and disregarding superficial trends, the project instead responds to the surrounding environment, weather conditions, and the harsh reality that the notion of a "designer bar" in Melbourne is swiftly replaced by the next in line. By the time Melbourne grows tired of this temporary bar, the bar itself will have already moved on, having grown weary of Melbourne itself.
Section 8 stands as a robust response to an overly refined archetype. Notably, Melbourne's bar culture tends to be disconnected from the urban fabric, existing in its own secluded realm. This project cleverly embraces its temporary nature and limited resources, showcasing the theme of impermanence. It becomes intertwined with the city, embedded in the underlying urban landscape. Through the transformation of 100 pallets into decking, seating, and tables, as well as the suspension of 50 umbrellas creating partial enclosure, the project captures the essence of transience. A single shipping container serves as a bar, while another provides necessary bathroom facilities.
The unorthodox seating arrangement invites patrons to interpret and choose their own seating arrangements, thereby determining the capacity of the project based on individual preferences.
