RAE ST HOUSE
2023
‘Rather than a singular mass, the home is conceived as a series of isolated pavilions, strung together by a continuous utility corridor that serves as a unifying connective tissue’
Located in Hawthorn, where the urban fabric is defined by deep, narrow allotments, this residence redefines the traditional suburban "hallway" as a unifying element. Rather than a singular mass, the home is conceived as a series of isolated pavilions, strung together by a continuous utility corridor that serves as a unifying connective tissue.
This organizational logic is a response to the challenges of privacy and overlooking. By pulling zones apart, the design introduces a sequence of private courtyards that allow gardens to be woven into the center of the floor plan rather than being relegated to the front and rear of the site.
The extruded terracotta blocks provide a monolithic, tactile weight to both the interior and exterior, offsetting earthy, raw texture against precision steel joinery.
Through the rhythmic balance of mass and void, the design breaks the elongated site into a collection of tighter, more intimate spaces
