‘The deep forms come to life through hand-rolled brass sheets and extruded brass tubes (that occasionally hold lighting and services), responding to the seating below, and formed as purpose-built booths that create ‘cones of silence’

At a fine-dining level, food is an artisanal creation, where every dish receives meticulous attention to its arrangement, presentation, smell, sound and taste. The sophisticated crafting of the Press Club dining room mirrors this philosophy. In the old Herald Sun building on the edge of the Melbourne CBD, this interior extends the discourse between the guest and chef within an elegant setting.

Drawing inspiration from the mesmerising patterns of oil droplets mixed with water, the ceiling becomes an interlocking myriad of organic shapes, arranged in a harmonious manner. The deep forms come to life through hand-rolled brass sheets and extruded brass tubes (that occasionally hold lighting and services), responding to the seating below, and formed as purpose-built booths that create ‘cones of silence’. Bespoke perforated steel within each cone effectively diffuses sound, ensuring a serene dining atmosphere.

The booths offer a welcoming embrace of soft leather and pale timber with staff gliding along a central runway, catering to both rows, serving with pragmatic grace across each table. At one end of the room, a champagne bar stands as an exquisite creation of brass and gold-plated steel, crafted to accommodate an array of glasses used during service. In contrast, at the other end, gold-plated steel tubes descend, forming a wall and door leading to the outside world — a world where considerations are not as meticulous or complete.
