NEST

2009

‘The composition of the found timber pieces – recycled from a demolished agriculture shed in regional Victoria – is carefully manipulated to form a bird’s nest-like cube that is ‘soft on the inside and spikey and defensive on the outside’

As part of the exhibition Shelter on Kindness, March Studio were commissioned to produce an installation that explored the elements of ‘shelter’ and questioned conventional ideas of home.

The result, 4” x 2” Nest, is made from only one material: a 16-tonne pile of 4” x 2” OB (Ordinary Builder’s) hardwood, the same timber that went into making many suburban Australian houses.

The life that was brought into these dwellings was circumstantial, the materials that made them, however, were essential. The composition of the found timber pieces – recycled from a demolished agriculture shed in regional Victoria – is carefully manipulated to form a bird’s nest-like cube that is ‘soft on the inside and spikey and defensive on the outside’.

The work 4” x 2” Nest responds to ideas of a ‘gathered architecture’ – structures that are woven or stacked from materials that are otherwise discarded. The project provokes several fundamental propositions around architecture and domesticity: if a home is a collection of stuff, what makes a shelter? Sanctuary and protection nurture fundamental acts of kindness.
