LIMEBURNERS HOUSE

2023 - PRESENT

’The architecture unfolds as a series of cascading concrete shelves that mirror the land’s incline, establishing a measured rhythm between the built form and the terrain.’

Set within the coastal landscape of Portsea, this residence is conceived as a composed refuge, embedded into the natural topography of its rising site. The architecture unfolds as a series of cascading concrete shelves that mirror the land’s incline, establishing a measured rhythm between the built form and the terrain. The project also takes advantage of northern views toward Port Phillip Bay, orienting key living spaces to engage with light, horizon and outlook.

Each concrete plane is softened by planted margins, where greenery spills over the edges to blur the threshold between architecture and topography. Rather than a static object placed upon the land, these planted edges ensure the house feels like an extension of the site itself, dissolving the distinction between masonry and the natural terrain.

The plan is organised into two distinct wings: a private domain for the residents at the fore, and a guest wing to the rear. This allows the home to expand and contract, shifting from a quiet retreat to a site of gathering.

The structural logic is driven by a language of stacked concrete beams. These elements enable generous spans and are intentionally expressed rather than concealed within the ceiling. Their repetition establishes a baffled ceiling condition that produces a range of spatial experiences, from more intimate compressed zones to larger open volumes, all unified by a single formal system.

By contrasting the permanence of concrete with crafted timber elements, the design mediates between monumental form and human-scale detail—creating a space that is both elemental in presence and responsive to the requirements of daily utility.
