1974 T2 Bay Window Kombi, beautifully finished in two tone Flipper Blue and Pearl White.
Who knows how many kilometres it has actually done and, honestly, who cares? The odometer reaches 99,999 and simply starts all over again. If only everything in life offered such a clean reset.
Powered by a 2.0 litre engine with Weber carburettors and a rare automatic transmission, it also features a Sunliner pop top and has been fully restored and garaged since 2018.
The Kombi has also been professionally lowered, so underground car parks and crosswinds are not quite as terrifying as they used to be.
Inside, you’ll find vinyl seats and a sophisticated 1970s air conditioning system consisting of two wind down windows and two flappy windows. On a hot day, it’ll have the kids steaming up nicely like pork and prawn in a bamboo basket, giving them an authentic taste of what we endured in the late 70’s, early 80’s.
At almost 53 years old, this Kombi is in better shape than I am. Mechanically, it has no issues, and the body, while requiring occasional attention like us all, presents far better than a divorced middle aged man.
Before my separation and when I had a disposable income, I spent more than $50,000 on the restoration, and I have the receipts to prove it. Attempting to restore a Kombi to this standard today would cost well over $100,000.
Unfortunately, tough times in the divorce proceedings mean it’s time to sell. While days of relaxation, surfing and spontaneous beach escapes are finally back on the cards, I’ll need to enjoy them in something a little more economical than this magnificent blue and white 1970s time capsule.
Perfect for overnight escapes, surfing trips, beach runs or simply cruising around on a summer’s day. And when your football team loses and you simply can’t face your family anymore, it also doubles as an extra bedroom, complete with window covers supplied at no extra cost.
