Who knows how many kilometres it has actually done—and, honestly, who cares? The odometer reaches 99,999 and simply starts all over again. If only everything in life offered such a clean reset.

Powered by a 2.0-litre engine with Weber carburettors and a rare automatic transmission, it also features a Sunliner pop-top and has been fully restored and garaged since 2018.

Before my separation I spent more than $50,000 on the restoration, and I have the receipts to prove it. Attempting to restore a Kombi to this standard today would cost well over $100,000.

Unfortunately, tough times in the divorce proceedings mean it’s time to sell. While days of relaxation, surfing and spontaneous beach escapes are finally back on the cards, I’ll need to enjoy them in something a little more economical than this magnificent blue-and-white 1970s time capsule.
