JACKALOPE MELBOURNE

Jackalope Hotel is a design proposal for a new hotel in Melbourne’s CBD that responds to the client’s desire to create an experience that would ‘blur the boundaries between reality and imagination’.

Inspired by the theme of weather, the brief for the hotel included the requirement to showcase the client’s impressive collection of atmospheric art, including the 100-square-metre Rain Room by Random International. In addition, the small inner-city tower features thirty-two guest rooms, three restaurants, a back of house, and a rooftop bar with an internal ‘rainbow generator’.

Emerging from a classic red-brick heritage building, the hotel challenges the typical extruded typology of the inner-city tower; instead, the vertical form is an assemblage of program-led components tethered to the circulation core. These elements form progressive steps creating a bespoke structural language as the tower climbs to 70 metres above Flinders Lane below. A cantilevered terrace for private functions retains a consistent wall height to the street and shields views to the upper levels heightening the sense of perspective.

Echoing Melbourne’s often unpredictable weather, the rooftop bar and mechanical services are wrapped in a structure resembling a small cumulus cloud. Constructed from electro-polished stainless-steel wire, it mimics the colours of the sky and comes alive during sunrise and sunset. The hotel was fully detailed and resolved in early 2020 but was brought to an abrupt halt by the COVID-19 pandemic and Melbourne’s 262 long days of lockdown.
