FIGMENT

2010

‘Each jewellery piece is projected onto the opaque surfaces of a purpose-built white room using an arrangement of twenty old-school overhead projectors.’

This installation for e.g.etal gallery at Melbourne’s State of Design Festival challenged the conventional approach to the display of jewellery. Instead of merely presenting each piece in the usual manner, behind glass and in a well-lit niche, Figment presented the highly crafted objects in a new way; exposed, magnified, and viewed at multiple scales.

Each jewellery piece is projected onto the opaque surfaces of a purpose-built white room using an arrangement of twenty old-school overhead projectors. Positioned on white plinths of various heights, the projectors not only enlarge the fine objects, but also backlight them as a surface.

With the overlapping interplay of imagery filling the space, the projected variations came together to create a dynamic and vibrant landscape, allowing for a profound connection between the viewer and the object. The installation prompts viewers to delve into the intricate details of form, material, and craftsmanship, leading to a new and novel interpretation of the pieces, immersing them in a world of personal narratives and artistic expression.
