BLACKSTAR KIOSK
2009
‘The kiosk is conceived as a suspended halo, wrapping the tenancy in a continuous, lightweight skin derived from the brand’s signature packaging. This graphic field—playful, layered and slightly jumbled, becomes spatial, enveloping the customer experience while remaining visually permeable from all directions.’
Black Star Pastry’s Chadstone kiosk extends the brand’s evolution from a cult Sydney bakery into a globally recognisable identity, translating Studio Ongarato’s graphic language into a spatial and architectural form. Developed in close collaboration with the brand and its creative team, the project explores how architecture can operate as a three-dimensional expression of a two-dimensional identity.
Positioned at a key intersection within Chadstone Shopping Centre, the 30 square metre kiosk was required to navigate stringent centre guidelines, including maintaining clear sightlines to surrounding tenancies. Rather than resist these constraints, the design leverages them to produce a porous and legible form, one that reads as both object and atmosphere within the retail field.
The kiosk is conceived as a suspended halo, wrapping the tenancy in a continuous, lightweight skin derived from the brand’s signature packaging. This graphic field—playful, layered and slightly jumbled, becomes spatial, enveloping the customer experience while remaining visually permeable from all directions. The result is an architecture that performs simultaneously as signage, enclosure and identity.
Central to the project are the illustrations by Noritake, whose icons act as cross-cultural symbols of sharing and connection. These motifs, developed as part of Studio Ongarato’s broader brand strategy, are embedded within the architectural language, allowing the kiosk to operate as an extension of the brand narrative.
Together, the project demonstrates how tightly integrated collaboration between branding and architecture can produce a cohesive, immersive retail experience that is both highly specific and globally adaptable.
