AFTER DARK

2009

“The same yellow trace continues to move through our work—no longer just a drawing tool, but a material memory carried forward, reused and reinterpreted across projects.”

After Dark was conceived as a setting for late-night gatherings and intellectual exchange during the 2009 State of Design conference. Installed within Aesop’s headquarters in Fitzroy, and developed in close collaboration with curator Fleur Watson, the project drew from the core tools of architectural practice.

The temporary interior was constructed from the humble yet indispensable roll of yellow trace, used not just to represent ideas, but to form space itself. Sheets were cut to precise lengths and suspended from the existing grid ceiling, following a digitally modelled pattern. Fixed with removable bulldog clips, the installation formed a catenary-curved interior that was both fragile and spatially immersive, creating a series of intimate rooms and an arched auditorium.

In parallel, a collaboration with Absolut Vodka introduced a bar constructed entirely from empty Absolut bottles. Each bottle housed a planted terrarium, a small, self-contained world of salads and herbs that attendees could take home, extending the life of the installation beyond the event.

Illuminated by the existing fluorescent fittings, the trace emitted a soft, ambient glow, transforming the generic warehouse into a highly atmospheric environment. Following the event, the material was carefully rolled and retained for reuse, extending its life beyond the installation.
